Fernando

from Inventions by Greg Porée

/

about

For this instrumental, featuring the guitar, the violin and the accordion, Greg Porée adapted an exercise by Fernando Sor turning it into a melody-driven, Spanish tinged jazz piece. The late 18th century composer and guitarist Sor – also known as the “Beethoven of the guitar”- was to play a pivotal role in overturning the perception that the guitar was not a serious instrument. His works incorporated a strong sense of both melody and harmony which is very similar to Greg Porée’s approach to composition and to his main instrument, the classical guitar as a “serious” jazz instrument.
